A Sending Church

A Sending Church

Weekly Update – December 3rd, 2020

This week we will shift our focus a bit as we hear from a man who, for security purposes, we will refer to as JS. We will still light the advent wreath for the second week of advent and we will still sing Christmas songs as we anticipate the celebration of our Savior’s birth, but our focus during the time of preaching/teaching will be on international missions. JS and his family currently serve with the International Mission Board (IMB). They are here on furlough and looking to return next month. I am thrilled to have him here with us this week for not just our worship service, but also our Bible Study hour at 9:15am.

During our Bible Study hour I hope to give you a chance not only to get to know JS, but also to hear him speak on what it means to be a sending church. The International Mission Board (IMB) is the “umbrella” organization that our church partners with to send missionaries all over the world. But ultimately, we don’t rely upon the IMB to raise up, fund and support these missionaries. The IMB is merely an agent of the local church aimed at supporting the mission the church has been tasked with. It is the church that has been tasked with sending missionaries. Therefore, what does it look like to be a sending church and how do we grow in raising up missionaries? That is what JS is going to speak on. If you don’t typically come to Bible Study, I hope that you will join us this week at 9:15am.

Last week we began our focus on the Advent season, but as I said earlier, we will have a focus on international missions this Sunday. I hope that you will join us in person or via livestream as JS speaks.

Serving Him with You,

Announcements:

Christmas Baskets: This year we will be putting together 4 Christmas baskets. First Baptist will supply the turkeys, but we are asking you to help supply some of the other items. HERE is a list of what we need. Please drop these needed items in the basket in the foyer by December 13th.

Church Directory: In December we will begin the process of putting together a new church directory. This directory will come with a few more add-ons than our last one, one of which includes an online component. There is now only one day for pictures. That is Tuesday, December 8th. For others who are not able to have their pictures taken on this date, another date will be added in the spring. Go HERE for more information about how to sign up online for a slot, or sign up on Sunday morning in the welcome center.

The goal of the IMB is to raise 175 million dollars this year. Our goal at First Baptist Church is to raise $9000. Will you consider partnering with us by giving, as we seek to support international missions? You can give on Sunday mornings through one of our offering boxes located in the foyer or the welcome center. Just mark your envelop as “missions” or “Lottie Moon.” Or you can give online HERE. Choose “missions” under the Fund tab. You can find more information about this offering HERE.
