Parallels in Scripture

Parallels in Scripture

Weekly Update – September 18th, 2020

On Sunday mornings we will be in two different studies. In our service time, we will continue through The Sermon on the Mount. Then during our Bible Study hour, we will be in the book of James. Contrary to first impressions though, these are not necessarily two separate studies. Sure they are in two different places of Scripture, but there are a lot of parallels between the two.

Consider some of the topics addressed in both studies:

Rejoice and Be Glad:

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:10-12)

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” (James 1:2)

Avoid sinful anger:

“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matt. 5:22)

“. . . the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James 1:20)

Be doers, not just hearers, of the word:

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (Matt. 7:24-27)

“. . . be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

These are just a few. For more, check out some of these parallels HERE.

Either way, I hope that you will join us for our new Bible Study this coming Sunday at 9:15am.

This week we will continue in our series on the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7. On Sunday we will take a look at “Salt and Light: Living Before Others” from Matthew 5:13-16. I hope that you will join us in person or by livestream.

Serving Him with You,

Childcare Meeting: On September 20th following the morning service, there will be a brief, mandatory meeting for all childcare workers. This includes anyone who is volunteering with our nursery or Awana ministries this fall. The goal of this meeting is to ensure that we all are on the same page regarding health guidelines and procedures. We will meet in the sanctuary.

Grade School Sunday School: In addition to our nursery opening back up, our 1st – 5th grade Sunday School class will be available during our Sunday School hour. This is the only children’s Sunday School class offered at this time. They will meet in the usual location, upstairs in U-5. You can find the health guidelines for this class HERE.

Nursery: Our nursery is now open! We have two rooms that will hold children ages 0-3. We plan to fully comply with all regulations from the CDC and Jackson County as we seek to safely and wisely care for our children. To start, the nursery will only be for our worship service. You can find the health guidelines for the nursery HERE.

Members’ Meeting: On Wednesday, September 23rd, we will have our regularly scheduled quarterly members’ meeting at 7:00pm. Come and be encouraged through hearing updates regarding various ministries and participate in making decisions regarding the life and direction of the church. The meeting will be in person, but also available virtually through zoom too. For the zoom link for this evening, contact the church office.

Missouri Missions Offering: Every year, along with nearly 1,800 other churches, our church partners to pray and give concerning the Lord’s work in our state. The statewide goal is $725,000 this year. Our church goal is $3,500. I hope that you will consider praying and giving to this effort throughout this month. As with your normal offering, you can give in person, by mail or online. Just mark MMO when you do give. Check out more information about this effort HERE.

Health Guidelines: With no changes from the Health Department, we will continue in Phase 2.5 here in Jackson County. That means masks are still required. You can find the official guideline on mask wearing from the health department HERE. You can also find a video that outlines what Phase 2.5 looks like for our church HERE.

Awana

On October 4th, Awana will kick off for the year. From 5:45 – 7:30pm, children ages 3 to 6th grade are welcome to come and hear the truth about Jesus, memorize Scripture, and play games every Sunday evening. There will be no Bible Study during this time nor will there be a nursery.

Bible Study

We are currently in a study through the book of James. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays at 9:15am. You can find a video explaining what to expect during our Bible Study hour HERE.
