Dual Citizenship

Dual Citizenship

Weekly Update – January 21st, 2021

With the inauguration of a new president, there have been many different feelings and emotions across our country. I think there are two helpful things we need to remember as we process this transition of power. First, we have a dual citizenship that should affect the way that we think. Then second, we ought to pray for all of those in power, regardless of who they are.

First, our dual citizenship. We are citizens of the United States. We should be concerned about who are elected officials are, what laws pass and how we conduct ourselves as a nation. But, even more, we are citizens of an everlasting kingdom (Phil. 3:20). This kingdom is ruled by a perfect ruler who has a perfect law. Plus, his kingdom will ultimately triumph over any other kingdom of this world (Rev. 11:15).

Second, pray for your leaders. Paul writing to Timothy says, “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may live a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Tim. 2:1-2). We pray because we believe that God is sovereign over our country and that he has in fact appointed every official who is in authority over us (Rom. 13:1-2).

Regardless of what your thoughts are from this week, rest assured that God reigns over all, and we have access to him as our king at any time day or night. Trust that he is at work in the midst of good or bad, and that ultimately our joy does not come from how the events of our nation work out, but in Christ who has delivered us from this world.

This week we will continue in our brief series titled, Growing Your Faith. Our message will be titled “Walk by the Spirit” from Galatians 5:13-25. I hope that you will join us in person or via livestream.

Fighter Verse for the Week:

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." - John 1:12-13

Food Pantry: By God’s grace, on a regular basis we have been able to serve our community in a very practical way by providing food for those in need. Currently we have a need for a handful of items to continue this ministry. You can find a list of those items HERE. Feel free to drop non-perishable food items in the basket in the foyer.

Ladies’ Bible Study: Ladies, join us for a Bible study through the book of Colossians starting on February 15th at 6:30pm. The study will be a video based study led by Sheryl Nelson. There is a sign up sheet in the hallway, or sign up by contacting the church office. You can find more information HERE.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering: Every year at this time, we raise funds to support missionaries all over the world who are serving with the International Mission Board (IMB). The goal of the IMB is to raise 175 million dollars this year. Our goal at First Baptist Church is to raise $9000. So far we have received just under $6,000. If you haven’t already, will you consider partnering with us by giving, as we seek to support international missions? You can give on Sunday mornings through one of our offering boxes located in the foyer or the welcome center. Just mark your envelop as “missions” or “Lottie Moon.” Or you can give online HERE. Choose “missions” under the Fund tab. You can find more information about this offering HERE.
