Weekly Update – February 26th, 2026
On Sunday, we were challenged to consider one person in our life who we could intentionally seek out, with the goal of sharing the gospel with, over the remaining part of this year. We called this initiative, Who is Your One? Everyone was given a bookmark with 30 different verses on it, along with a card at the end of that bookmark that is meant to be torn off with the name of your “one” written down on it. This coming Sunday, you will turn that in, and we as a church will pray for those names. There will be baskets in the sanctuary and in the welcome center for you to place that card.
Who is Your One is based out of Matthew 4:18-22. In this passage we see one of the first actions that Jesus does in his ministry. It is the calling of his disciples. Peter, Andrew, James and John are all out fishing. Jesus comes to them and says, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately these men drop their nets in obedience and the follow Jesus. There are a couple of key things that we see in this event though. The first is that Jesus is intentional in who he calls and in what he calls them to do. The problem is that this intentional calling is to a task that is impossible.
The call to be a fisher of men comes from Jeremiah 16:16. Here, the Lord is pronouncing judgment upon Israel through “fishers” who will catch them and bring them to destruction. Jesus, in Matthew 4:19, is calling his disciples, “fishers”, but now, their role will be to pronounce salvation to all who will find refuge in him. Likewise, as followers of Jesus Christ, we too are called to be fishers of men. We are to proclaim the good news of salvation that is offered to all through Jesus Christ. This work of salvation is an impossible task for us. It is something that only God can do through bringing the “light” of truth into someone’s heart (2 Cor. 4:6). Therefore, we have been intentionally called as disciples, to be fishers who proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, trusting God to do the impossible and save some, through the message we make known. .
Who is Your One is an opportunity to be faithful to our intentional calling as fishers of men. It encourages us to evaluate where God has placed us as we consider someone or some family to specifically pray for, with the aim of sharing Christ. So then, sit down by yourself or with your family and pray through who the Lord might want you to invest in for the next several months. Then, write down their name, pray and invite others to pray with you through turning in the Who is Your One card on Sunday, and take the first step in sharing Christ with them by inviting them to come to Easter brunch and service with you on April 5th. Consider this challenge and seek to reach “one” with us this year.
