Weekly Update – March 12th, 2025
On April 6th, we will have a mini conference at First Baptist Church titled, Taking Every Thought Captive. Our speaker for the entire morning will be Marshall Adkins. Marshall has been with us before, but on April 6th, he will take time to specifically address many of the common thoughts of our day, how these thoughts influence us in our relationships with others and what we need to do to counter these thoughts with Scripture. We will begin all together in the sanctuary during our Equipping Hour at 9:15am discussing the topic, Applying Scripture to Worldly Thought. After that, we will have our worship service where we will hear from Colossians 2:6-15 on The Sufficiency of Christ.
Our call as Christians is to apply Scripture to every area of life. Second Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” What this means is that Scripture provides us with more than facts about historical events and information needed to go to heaven. It provides the very words of God and contains everything needed “for life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). Therefore, the only way that we will be able to discern what is good, acceptable and perfect for our lives and in our interactions with others, is through understanding the Scriptures and specifically what they say about Jesus Christ (Rom. 12:2).
It necessarily follows then, that if Scripture is truly sufficient for every area of life, then we must believe that people can be healed, strengthened and helped as they grow in their understanding of the gospel and in their relationship with Jesus Christ. As Hebrews 4:12 says, “the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of the soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” When the word of God is opened before us and applied to our hearts, we are changed from one degree of glory to the next (2 Cor. 3:18).
The problem that we face is that the culture surrounding us gives us alternative views to Scripture, especially when it comes to how to handle personal and interpersonal problems. Often advice comes in the form of a new diagnosis, a call for prolonged therapy, or inward focused, self-produced solutions. And though much of what we receive from those around us may be well meaning and generally accepted by our society, we must evaluate everything we hear with a careful ear so that we might discern what is pleasing to the Lord (Eph. 5:10). To do this we can’t compartmentalize our church life and separate it from the problems we face. Instead, we must see the sufficiency of the scriptures and seek to apply them to every area of life.
The goal of our time together on April 6th will be to understand how it is we can take every thought captive by the word of God. We must see that the battles we face are not merely physical, but spiritual, and the weapons that we fight with have “divine power to destroy strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:3-5). Therefore, we must make sure that no one takes us captive by the popular thoughts and secular theories of the day (Col. 2:8). I encourage you to make every effort to make this time a priority as we first join together at 9:15am, followed by our service at 10:30am.
Serving Him with You,
Pastor Michael Nelson

Fighter Verse for the Week
Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died-more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
-Romans 8:33-34
