Weekly Update – June 29th, 2023
At Sunday’s Members’ Meeting we announced some updates to our staff and deacons. To our staff, we added Daniel Holsten and Matthew Klika. Then, Bob Berning, Jake Norman and Kamto Eze will join Nate Johnson and Alex Martin as deacons. Let me explain exactly what that means for us now.
For our staff, the addition of Daniel Holsten and Matthew Klika brings some intentionality to a few needed areas. Daniel will come on as our Director of Youth, with his duties primarily being the development of our youth through partnering with parents in the spiritual growth of their children. He will lead Sunday morning Sunday School, Wednesday night services, as well as facilitate opportunities for the youth to connect and grow in the Lord.
Matthew will come on as a Pastoral Assistant. A pastoral assistant is a unique one-year role aimed to fill a specific need associated with pastoral ministry. This is meant to be an extension of our internship that is offered to seminary students. Matthew will primarily oversee assimilation and college ministry. In terms of assimilation, Matthew will help connect guests from the moment they step onto our property until the begin serving as members of our church. Then, with college ministry, Matthew will oversee our connection with Longview Community College and potentially Calvary University.
As deacons, the men in this role are intended to lead the church in the ministry of service. In many ways deacons are the shocks of the church. When there are bumps in front of the church that might lessen the effect of the ministry that the body might be able to achieve together, there is a deacon to use his gifts and skills to allow the ministry to continue without the church being caught up with something that might be important and stop the work of God from continuing. Therefore, these men will serve in roles such as homebound care, van ministry, building maintenance, benevolence and care, security as well as other areas of service that may be needed.
At First Baptist Church, elders lead the ministry, deacons facilitate the ministry and we all as members do the ministry. Then staff, ministerial and non-ministerial, help to perform specific functions that allow the church to carry out its vision and mission, as directed by the elders. By God’s grace, we want to serve in a way that best allows our church to accomplish the work of the Lord as we honor the word of the Lord. Continue to pray that we would do so.

"This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?" - Psalm 18:30-31
