Weekly Update – September 4th, 2025
Last year we brought back our Sunday night service on the 2nd Sunday of the month. As I often remind us, everything we do here at First Baptist Church is meant to be done on purpose. We are not looking to merely fill a spot in the week or give you something extra to do at night. We want to be deliberate in how we conduct ourselves and intentional in seeking to fulfill our mission to proclaim and display the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our Sunday night service is designed to specifically fill two needs that we have as a church: corporate prayer and an additional time for the proclamation of God’s word.
With regard to a corporate prayer time, let me say that I am thankful for the many opportunities that we do have to pray as a church. We make sure that our home groups are places of prayer, our services are filled with prayer and every time we gather, there is some sort of prayer that is given. But to further strengthen our church, we should also seek to have a corporate time of extended prayer with one another. If we are to be a people dependent upon the Lord to act through our efforts as individuals and as a church, then we ought to look for an opportunity to come together as one specifically for an extended time of prayer. Our Sunday night service fills that need.
When it comes to an additional time for God’s word to be proclaimed, by God’s grace, we have been blessed with many men who can not only preach, but men who long to grow in the gift of preaching that the Lord has given to them. Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:2 that we should entrust the word of God “to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” We should not take this command lightly. Therefore, we want to take the opportunity to further aid in this entrusting by allowing men who aspire to pastoral ministry to preach and also seeking to build up elders within our own church by encouraging them to preach as well. Our Sunday night service fills this need as well.
For our corporate prayer time, we typically have four areas that we aim to pray through. First, we aim to pray for the needs of our church, second, the needs of another local church in our area, third, for the lost in our lives, and last, for a specific area of ministry, need in our community or world event. After an opening song, we devote the first half of our service to this time of prayer. The second half of our service is devoted to the preaching of God’s word. This year, we will be working through the second half of 1 John. After I preach in our September meeting, we will hear from Dan Holsten in October, Andrew Davis in November, Martin Maharas in January, Kamto Eze in February, Dave Hutichson in March and Scott Neal in April.
I hope that you will join us for our Sunday night service this year. It will take place on the 2nd Sunday evening of the month at 6:00pm. Our first service will take place on Sunday, September 14th. Come and pray with us, be encouraged by the word of God preached, and build up men as they seek to “fan into flame the gift of God” (2 Tim. 1:6).
