Weekly Update – August 18th, 2022
Last Sunday we took a look at Ephesians 4:17-5:2 and how we are called to live the Christian life. The calling given to every single one of us is to “be imitators of God” (Eph. 5:1) as we live lives that are transformed (Eph. 4:17-24) together in the church (Eph. 4:25-32). The best way to sum up what this looks like is to say that as Christians united together in the church, or for us, at First Baptist Church, to show this transformation that has occurred in us, we imitate God by speaking and living out the gospel of Jesus Christ. Essentially that is why we gather together as a church and that is the basis for all our ministries. We seek to speak and live out the gospel of Jesus Christ. Why? So that we might see our families, our community and ultimately our world transformed by the power of God.
With our mission as our basis, again to speak and live out the truths of the gospel, strived for in an effort to fulfill our vision, to see our families, our community and our world transformed by the power of God, there are many implications for what our times together will look like. The first implication is that our times in our main gathering are focused on the word of God. Every time we gather on Sunday mornings, without exception, we will come together to hear the word of God preached, sing the word of God together, pray the word of God, read the word of God, and on some weeks “see” the word of God before us when we take the Lord’s Supper or witness baptism. From our main time together flow many other opportunities or ministries in which we seek to speak or live out the truths of the gospel. Let me highlight just a few of these opportunities for this fall:
- Sunday School: On Sunday mornings at 9:15am we have Sunday school classes that range from 0-12th grade. Our 0-3 class meets in the nursery suite, our K-2nd grade and our 3rd -6th grade classes will meet upstairs, while our youth, for the time being, join the adults in their Bible study classes. All of these classes are geared towards coming alongside our parents to aid them in teaching their children the word of God.
- Bible Study: While our children attend their Sunday School classes, there are three adult classes being offered this fall at 9:15am on Sunday mornings. There is a ladies class offered at the end of the hallway on the main floor, a Bible exposition class, downstairs in the fellowship hall and a discipleship class offered in the sanctuary. The goal for Bible Study hour is to further teach and equip one another to speak and live out the gospel.
- Home Groups: On the first and third Sunday nights this fall, from 5:30-7:30pm, three different home groups will be meeting. The aim of our home groups is to allow us to better speak and live out the gospel, by caring for each other, discipling one another and displaying a witness before the world around as we seek to serve our community.
- AWANA/Youth: On Wednesday nights in the fall, Awana and Youth will meet at 6:30pm. Dinner will be served at 6:00pm for all who would like to come. Our hope is that through these two ministries, First Baptist Church will be able to further speak and live out the gospel before, not only the children of our church, but also before the community before us.
These are just a few of the opportunities for this fall. We will continue to have other avenues available too, such as our Ladies Bible study, men’s get togethers, clothing giveaways, and our fall festival. Even so, the mission in all that we will do, will be to live the Christian life together as we speak and live out the gospel, in an effort to see our families, our community and our world transformed by the power of God.
